Since the 1950s, cultured cells have been used to develop treatments against cancer and other diseases. The conventional approach is to treat the cells with a pharmaceutical whereupon the collective cell response is measured at a predetermined point in time by adding a staining reagent. The prevailing approach thus provides very little information on how individual cells respond over time.

The recent realization that a very small sub-population of rare cancer cells controls tumor growth and spreading has led to a growing demand for a new generation of scientific instruments that can individually analyze unstained cancer cells over several cell generations while maintaining physiological relevance. Technology developments in consumer electronics have made it possible to accommodate this new demand.

PHI's vision is to supply medical science and its 120 000 preclinical research laboratories with a new generation of easy to use and affordable scientific instruments that ultimately will lead to a cure for cancer and other diseases that plague humanity.

"HoloMonitor is very affordable. It is one of my best investments so far. The spectrum of applications is endless. I am fully convinced that this is the beginning of a new era for research.
